“Chinyere, whistling a lovely tune, as she gently applied the Mary Kay‘s foundation on her beautiful face, called out her friend’s name loudly, “Ola! Ola!” No response. “Olachi!” she screamed on top of her voice after opening her bedroom door and finding Olachi in.
Olachi awoke, startled, and slowly raised her head from the pillow, yawned tiredly, and responded, “Goodmorning.”
“Ola, it’s almost 9am and you are still in bed on a Sunday morning, ain’t you going to church?”
“Are you serious?” She inquired jumping to her feet, and heading towards the bathroom.

Her friend smiled, having got her to start preparing. Actually, it was a little over 7am. She needed to do that since Olachi was a heavy sleeper especially on a non-working day. She is a workaholic as she is a heavy sleeper.
In her late thirties, she is already a chartered accountant that runs her own firm and has the multinationals as her clients.

Olachi, is what you could label as a “Deeper-Life” born-again Christian. Naturally beautiful, and never applied make-up or lip stick. She had broken so many relationships because she didn’t want sex before marriage and the guys were not willing to play by her rules.
In addition to being a chartered accountant, she possessed an MBA in finance and an MSc in accounting from the prestigious Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA.
A brilliant woman that every man desired but could not put up with her religious belief and rigidity. She ignored the men that came, and left.
Regularly, re-assuring herself, “One day, God would bring my own man, and he would see things as I see them as well”.
A lot of her friends didn’t buy that idea, they felt that the world has changed, and as such before a man could take a woman to the altar, he must have gone under the sheets with her, so they always argued with her over that.
One particular scenario, was when she was in Harvard, she had a heated argument with Carol, (An African-American that was working for United Nations but took study leave) over sex before marriage.
“This weekend, I will spend it with my fiancee in Florida, I won’t be in Boston for your birthday, really sorry” She had told Olachi and her other friends.
“Do you really have to?” Olachi asked a little disappointed, considering their friendship.
“I am sorry Ola, but I have to, it’s been a long time I felt him inside me, and besides, I don’t want him, having it with another woman.”
” You can’t be serious!” Olachi exclaimed, you mean you are already sleeping with him?”
They all burst into laughter. “Ola, you are old school, and if you continue like this, as my cousin in Nigeria would say, “You go tey for house.” (It will take time for you to be married) More laughter, and humiliation was about to follow suit if not for the timely intervention of one of them, who wasn’t part of the laughter earlier.
“We don’t have to be this hard on her ladies, please, we should respect her own view, obviously, she has a reason for saying that” Chinyere defended and that singular act saved Olachi from further embarrassment.
They now live together as spinsters, Chinyere, a devout Christian and more contemporary than Olachi is a highly sought after criminal attorney in Nigeria.
Though circumstances nearly made her lose interest in her christian faith and moral values, if not that her friend, Olachi talked her out of it, for a long while when she returned to Nigeria, she had stopped attending church and could even pass for a free thinker.
For years, she hated pastors, and Christianity because of the terrible stories she was getting about some Nigerian pastors.
After that time, Chinyere lost faith in God and religion, and decided to be a free thinker, but events later happened that she needed to reconsider her stand, and one of such was when she joined Olachi to her church.
One would still wonder why someone like Olachi would be attending The Rock of Salvation, a contemporary church with a razzmatazz young pastor as the general overseer.
But what became much more surprising was that, Chinyere would be the one now waking Olachi up after attending three Sunday services, she didn’t need any further conviction that it was where she belonged.
To be continued.
