Russia reported 8,764 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, as the world, by one tracking estimate reached 5 million cases and still counting.
Russia’s caseload today was its lowest daily rise since May 2.
It now has 308,705 documented infections.
The country’s coronavirus response centre said 135 people died in the past 24 hours, also a record.
On Tuesday, Russia reported 115 deaths.
After today’s number, Russia’s death toll from the virus is now 2,972.
Russia is not the only country breaking the grim charts.
Brazil is also racking up numbers as it jumped to the third position, overtaking both Spain and the UK.
On Monday, Brazil posted 16,517 cases and followed up today with another 3,497.
While worldometers.info estimates the caseload of the South American country at 275,382, John Hopkins University reports a slight variance 275,087.
The UK continued to build up its reputation as the worst affected in Western Europe, with death records of between 35,000 and over 41,000 by Reuters estimate.
UK’s caseload of the virus stands at 250,141, according to John Hopkins.
The United States continues to lead the world with over 1.5 million cases.
The death toll now stands above 93,000, almost a third of global total of 326,501, according to worldometers.info as at 18:00 GMT.
