Supfrica: First African-Owned Social Messaging App Emerges

In light of new technological developments in Africa, a new social messaging application much better and faster than Whatsapp, Messenger and other counterparts have been created by an African from Sierra Leone.

Supfrica is the creation of Hafiz Alhassan-Kanu a US-based fellow from Sierra Leone. The social messaging app is a firm demonstration of the continent’s ability to compete in social media messaging development. It can be likened to WhatsApp -except that it is 2 times faster.

Techfrica is the company behind the app, and it is owned by the company’s CEO, Mr. Hassan Hafiz Bakarr-Kanu Sr. who launched the app on the Google Play store on the 11th of December, 2020.

The App became known to Sierra Leoneans when it was advertised in a Facebook post which went viral on and off Facebook. As of today, analysis show that the app has reached over 19,000+ downloads on Google Play Store making it the first app made by a Sierra Leonean to climax that far.

The app is also amazingly rated number 1 on Google Play Store Top Free Apps; leading the world’s top messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Telegram, WeChat, and so on.

Sending a message on Supfrica is faster than sending a message on WhatsApp. A voice and video call in Africa is of high quality just as WhatsApp. Other features of the application include;

  • Ability to handle voice calls and video calls in a faster, cheaper, and much more audible format.
  • It also has the ability to forward messages to more than 20 contacts at once, unlike WhatsApp.
  • Multiple groups can be created on the application with an ability to add an unlimited number of contacts to the group, unlike WhatsApp
  • The application also handles 2G, 3G, and 4G perfectly without scrambling when calling voice and video calls.

As a continent, Africa has a lot of experts with the technical know-how to build some of these platforms but due to some reasons, many of these people hire or sell their expertise and creative ideas to foreign companies who end up owning these ideas with minimal recognition. Considering the major leading social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and so on, which are thoroughly used by Africa youths today, all of them are owned by foreign companies.

However, the narrative has changed with Supfrica and it is enough to prove that the tech revolution Africa is waiting for is gradually emerging.
