Gunmen suspected to be bandits, yesterday opened fire at Yartashar Sahabi Market, under Dansadau Emirate in Maru Local Government area of Zamfara State, killing one person, injured many, and set the market ablaze.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the bandits stormed the market square, began shooting sporadically on air.
He explained that during the attack, many people were injured while trying to escape from the bandits.

According to him, some residents locked themselves inside their houses, while the bandits went away with food items worth millions of naira belonging to the traders, after which they set the market ablaze.
‘The bandits after looting some food items set almost all the stalls of the market, including some provisions belonging to traders on fire and ran to the bush as they sighted the Mobile Police attached to Operation Puff Adder,’ the source hinted.
Africa Today News, New York reports that Governor Matawalle had last year initiated reconciliation process with bandit groups, but some bandits are yet to embrace the peace and reconciliation initiative.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state police command, SP. Muhammad Shehu proved abortive as his telephone line was switched off.
