Algeria Issues $100m Grant To Palestinians

North African country, Algeria has agreed to give a grant of $100m (£75m) to the Palestinian Authority over the latter’s financial situation.

Africa Today News, New York reports that Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune made this announcement after meeting the visiting Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas on Monday evening.

Mr Tebboune revealed that Algeria would be hosting a meeting of Palestinian factions in the near future.

The Palestinian Authority has major financial problems, which leaves it struggling to pay public sector employees.

Algeria has increased its activity over the Palestinian issue recently, just as its neighbour Morocco has been building new ties with Israel after signing a normalisation deal last year.

This is coming just a few months after Algeria demanded ‘total respect’ from France following a row over visas and critical comments from Paris about the North African country.

Africa Today News, New York reports that the moves were sparked by a bitter row over visas, followed by media reports that French President Emmanuel Macron had told descendants of Algeria’s 1954-1962 war of independence that Algeria was ruled by a ‘political-military system’ that had ‘totally re-written’ its history.
