A man identified as Olafuro Peterside has reportedly been shot by a police officer in Elekahia, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Rivers State, at the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to gathered details, the victim, who was a father of three, was peacefully enjoying an outing with his family at a popular bar when he was shot by one of the policemen, with another officer present at the scene.
The spokesperson of the Rivers Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, revealed that the shooter and his colleague were serving in the 43-Squadron in Gombe state but were deployed on special duty in Rivers at the time of the incident.
The spokesperson, Iringe-Koko, mentioned that the police officers, upon receiving a warning from the residents about nearby robbery, fired shots into the air.

Iringe-Koko assured the public that both policemen responsible for the shooting have been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, where a thorough investigation into the incident will take place.
The Rivers Police Spokesman said, ‘Yes, the command is aware of the incident. From the information at my disposal, the man was with his family.’
‘There was an incident of robbery in the area, so the policemen shot into the air in response to the alarm raised.’
‘I think a stray bullet hit the man. The officers are from the PMF 43-Squadron, Gombe, but attached to special duty in Rivers State.’
According to her, the erring police officer and his colleague were already under interrogation, and she urged the public to remain calm in the wake of the unfortunate event.
