The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says it won’t accept the Republic of Niger junta’s three-year power transition plan.
Mr. Abdel-Fatau Musa who the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, made this disclosure on Sunday during an interview with the BBC which was monitored by Africa Today News, New York.
Recall that the leader of the Niger junta, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, stated in a televised broadcast on Saturday night that the army will only hand over power to the civilian government in the next three years.
However, Abdel-Fatau Musa, during the interview with BBC, described Tchiani’s proposal as a smokescreen for dialogue and diplomacy.

Also on Saturday, Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, led a delegation of ECOWAS to Niger in a last-ditch diplomatic effort to reach a peaceful resolution with the junta.
The delegation met with the ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum after meeting Tchiani, but no truce has been reached yet.
In another development, Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar has opened up on what the ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum told the delegation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during their visit on Saturday.
Bazoum spoke to the delegation about the challenges he has faced since he was detained by the military junta led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
Africa Today News, New York reports that Abdulsalami had on Saturday led a high-powered delegation of the ECOWAS to the troubled West African nation.
The delegation held a meeting with Prime Minister Ali Zeine who received them at the airport and led them to the presidential palace.
They also met with Tchiani, and his team for about 90 minutes and later President Mohamed Bazoum.
