The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has demanded a probe into allegations of insufficient feeding for troops on the frontline in the North East Theatre of Operations.
This information was disclosed by Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to Nwachukwu, the present Nigerian Army leadership holds the welfare of troops in high regard, regarding it as a vital element of the COAS Command Philosophy aimed at motivating the military.
‘The Nigerian army therefore takes these allegations very seriously and COAS has directed immediate investigation into the complaints to ascertain its veracity and unravel the circumstances,’ the army spokesman said.
The public and all army personnel were assured by Nwachukwu that a rigorous investigation would be launched to delve into the allegations.
He stated that the Nigerian army has consistently placed the well-being of troops, including their nutrition, as a top priority, highlighting the existence of a comprehensive feeding system for troops, particularly those on the front lines.

‘We, however, acknowledge that there may be isolated incidents where lapses occur, and we are determined to squarely address them.’
‘An internal investigation has already been initiated to ascertain the truth behind these allegations.’
‘We will thoroughly examine the supply chain, the quality of food provided, and any other factors that may have contributed to this situation,’ he said.
Nwachukwu reiterated that the Nigerian army’s commitment to transparency and accountability remains strong, and it will not condone any negligence or misconduct.
‘If any culpability is detected, it will attract appropriate disciplinary action and immediate corrective measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future,’ he assured.
Nwachukwu called upon all personnel to utilize the official feedback channels to voice any grievances or concerns they might harbour regarding their feeding arrangements, ensuring that timely action would be taken to address any valid issues.
He reiterated that the army will persevere in its fight against insurgency and other security challenges, vowing to provide soldiers with the requisite support and care to carry out their duties effectively.
‘We are committed to ensuring that our troops are well-fed, motivated, and equipped to defend our nation,’ he added.
