Mohbad's Family Denies Threats To Late Singer's Widow

Contrary to speculation, the family of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad, denies any reported attempts on the life of the deceased’s widow, Wunmi.

Allegedly, Wunmi raised concerns, stating that her late husband’s family posed a threat to her life and that of her son, Liam.

Furthermore, it was stated that she received unsettling calls from individuals, warning her to halt her quest for justice for her late husband’s soul.

The family, communicating through their legal team in a statement to newsmen on Friday evening, classified the allegation as sensitive and requested her to identify the specific family member responsible for the alleged threats.

Monisola Odumosu, a member of the legal team, signed the statement, which highlighted that the family, despite ongoing paternity disputes regarding their grandchild, disclaims any involvement in threatening the widow of their late son.

The statement read in part, “Mrs. Wunmi Aloba has raised some salient issues. First, she stated, ‘her husband’s family have vowed to kill her and her son’. Mrs. Wunmi Aloba has failed to list specific names of those who threatened her and show to the public the evidence of the threats issued to her by the Aloba Family.

“As the legal maxim connotes ‘incumbit probatio qui dicit non-qui negat” (he who asserts must prove). If seeking for truth about who killed their late son, Ilerioluwa Aloba is a threat to her, she should let the Nigerian public know.

“Our clients have not and are not in any position to threaten the wife of their late son notwithstanding the unsettled issues on the paternity of their grandchild. It will be recalled that even when Wunmi sent a scathing voice message laced with imprecations to Mr Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, Mr. Aloba took it that the emotional trauma from the death of his son, the late singer was enough, and he didn’t bother to respond to it.”

While citing claims by Mohbad’s wife that she had reported those calling and threatening her to the police, the Aloba family said she should allow the authorities to investigate the matter.

The statement added that the Nigerian Police knew the right measures to take on threats made to a complainant by phone.

On the concerns raised by Wunmi that it was five months since the Coroner’s court had sat last and she had not heard from the court, the legal team said, “The concerns bother our clients equally, if she needs clarity, she should consult with her counsel with respect to this.

“It is instructive to state that our clients have no reason whatsoever to and have not or will ever issue threats or bully Mrs Wunmi Aloba in any way. All hands, as it is apparent, are on deck in ensuring justice for the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba (Mohbad).

“As it is often said, conscience is an open wound, only truth can heal it and it is the truth both our clients and those involved in the campaign to unravel the cause of those involved in the death of the late singer are after.”

Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, and the circumstances surrounding his death stirred controversies on social media.

The Lagos State Police Command, on September 18, 2023, initiated a 13-man special investigation team tasked with probing the details of Mohbad’s demise.

The remains of Mohbad were exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy, aiming to shed light on the circumstances leading to his death.

In a tweet from September 2023, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the completion of the autopsy and stated that the police were “awaiting results.”

Aloba, in November 2023, emphatically stated that no one should take charge of his son’s burial without obtaining his explicit authorization.
