Employees in Niger State have ceased work today in response to a mandate issued by the local chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
The decision to initiate an indefinite strike arose due to the state government’s inability to satisfy their requirements.
On Monday, Idrees Lafene, the state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, and Ibrahim Gana, representing the Trade Union Congress, coordinated efforts to instruct civil servants in the state to embark on an indefinite strike. This move was prompted by the state government’s neglect to resume discussions regarding matters crucial to workers’ welfare and the state’s operational efficiency.
In an effort to forestall the strike, Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the State Government, briefed journalists on Tuesday about an upcoming meeting scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to address concerns raised by the labor unions.

He emphasized that under the Mohammed Bago administration, there existed a harmonious rapport with the organized labor, reassuring everyone that any contentious matters would be resolved with the state’s best interests in mind.
‘In furtherance of this understanding, the government of Niger State today, Tuesday 20th February, 2024 invited organised labour to a meeting by 2 pm and it is hoping to receive its cooperation in this regard,’ he said.
He reiterated to the public that the Bago administration values both the citizens and the workforce, emphasizing its willingness to engage in dialogue and negotiations to propel Niger State forward.
Nonetheless, a credible source within the organized labor union, speaking anonymously, verified that the anticipated meeting did not occur, leading to the continuation of the planned strike.
According to another source, the union’s leadership has directed all branches to rally their members for total compliance.
‘As usual, the situation room will be open as soon as the strike action begins. We shall continuously update you on the progress of the strike action as it unfolds. We seek your cooperation as we battle the government to better the welfare of all Nigerians.’
‘The insensitivity of the government to the plight of the ordinary Nigerian portends a very grave danger to all and sundry if the only voice of the voiceless is indifferent,’ the source noted.
Meanwhile, despite numerous tries to get in touch with Tanko Lawal, the Information Officer of the SSG who endorsed the statement regarding the planned meeting between the organized labor and the state government on Tuesday, his phone line was unresponsive.
