Rt. Hon. Allwell Asiforo Okere who is the Chairman of Abia State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described the departure of some members of the party in the state to other parties as the result of the party’s internal cleansing process.
Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu who is the immediate past governor of the state, has assured the party’s leadership, members, and his supporters that he will not be leaving the party. This comes in response to rumors circulating in the state about his potential defection from the party.
Okere while speaking at the Ogurube Layout headquarters of the party in Umuahia, the state capital in a meeting of party’s stakeholders from the 17 local government areas of the state described the recent decamping of some of the party’s members to other political parties as the effect of an ongoing internal or self-cleansing mechanism.

The state chairman who urged members of the party to put behind what transpired during the 2023 election, leading to the loss that they suffered in the election, posited that the party would be reclaiming power from the Labour Party (LP) led government in 2027.
He called on members of the party to be united and stand firm and make sure that they would be part of the June 29, July 6, and July 13 congresses of the party, adding that those that would be part of the party’s congresses should allow internal democracy to thrive.
Africa Today News, New York reports that former governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu who aligned with the position of the chairman of the party over the recent defection of some members, disclosed that a lot of people from other political parties have indicated interest to join the party.
