Yelwata Killings: 28 Arrested, IGP Reveals In Briefing

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed the arrest of 28 individuals believed to be behind the recent deadly attacks in Yelwata, Benue State.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun revealed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects connected to the violence, which claimed the lives of 47 people.

He reassured the public that the Nigeria Police Force remains fully capable of handling the situation, noting that operations are underway to recover illegally possessed small arms and light weapons as part of a broader strategy to restore peace and security in the region.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also disclosed that the police have stepped up border surveillance to stem the flow of irregular migrants into the country, which he described as a growing security concern.

He confirmed that all 26 key suspects apprehended in connection with the Yelwata killings would soon be charged in court. This includes 22 individuals recently arrested in Jos for their alleged involvement in the brutal murder of nine wedding-bound travellers en route to Quanpan.

Egbetokun further clarified that while 28 individuals were initially detained in the Yelwata case, two have since been exonerated, having been instrumental in facilitating the arrest of the primary suspects.
