Police have confirmed that “significant airspace restrictions” will be in force as part of a major security operation during US President Donald Trump’s upcoming state visit to the United Kingdom.
The restrictions, which apply to aircraft including drones, will cover Windsor Castle between 17 and 19 September, where King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host the president and First Lady Melania Trump. The measures will be enforced with the support of the National Police Air Service.
Chief Inspector Matthew Wilkinson of Thames Valley Police stressed the importance of public cooperation. “We will have resources available and tactics deployed to enforce these restrictions and deal with anybody who fails to adhere to them,” he said. “If you notice anything suspicious in the air or on the ground, please report this to police.”
The decision to host the visit at Windsor, rather than the traditional Buckingham Palace, reflects ongoing renovation works at the palace. Authorities say the chosen venue allows for robust security arrangements while minimizing disruption to the local community.
“As is typical for events of this scale, we are implementing a significant airspace restriction to keep the local community and attendees safe,” Ch Insp Wilkinson explained.
The visit will mark Trump’s second official reception by the British monarchy. In 2019, he was welcomed by Queen Elizabeth II during his first term. Historically, second-term US presidents have not received full state visits, instead being invited for smaller, more informal engagements. Trump’s return, however, will be greeted with full ceremonial honors.

A state banquet is expected in St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle, with senior royals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, participating. Trump will also receive a ceremonial welcome on the castle grounds, in line with Britain’s highest traditions of state hospitality.
Security agencies are working closely with the Royal Household to balance safety with public access during the three-day visit. While police anticipate some protests, their emphasis remains on ensuring the event runs smoothly.
The state visit is likely to draw global attention, reinforcing the symbolic importance of the US-UK relationship at a moment of shifting international dynamics.
