Mr Olusegun Onilude

The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr Olusegun Onilude says the welfare of his staff and a conducive working environment have always been the priority of his administration.

Onilude gave the assurance in a message to the entire workforce in the council on the occasion of this year’s International Labor Day (ILD).

According to the chairman, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your selflessness, devotion, commitment and hard work day in and day out to serve our people.

“My administration’s trajectory to success in the last five years would not be possible without the cooperation, cordial and healthy relationship between the Executive, Legislative arms and the entire workforce.

“I seize this opportunity to reiterate that the welfare of our staff and a conducive working environment have and will always be the priority of this administration.

“The last two years have been challenging for everyone across the globe as a result of COVID.

“Yet I commend your tenacity, devotion, creativity and productivity especially the frontline workers who defied all odds and remain undaunted all through,” he said.

Onilude said that as workers all over the world celebrate ILD, he celebrated everyone doing their best in their chosen field of endeavour no matter their position, status or significance.

According to him, you are doing your best in making this local government, Lagos State, Nigeria and the world a better place.

“May our labors, sacrifices and those of our heroes’ past not be in vain? Congratulations and happy Workers Day,” he said.

Similarly, Ms Funmi Adeogun, a Lawyer urged states to ensure the implementation of a memorandum on financial autonomy for the Judiciary

Adeogun, who is the treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), on financial autonomy for the judiciary made the call in an interview following the celebration of workers’ day.

Workers’ day is an international day set aside every May 1, to commemorate the achievements of labor movements.

It is also tagged May Day or Labor Day and is observed as a public holiday.

According to Adeogun, it is important for all states of the Federation to ensure implementation of financial autonomy for the Judiciary, noting that this was the major reason for the industrial action by Judiciary workers in 2021.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) on April 6, 2021, embarked on a strike to press home its demand for the implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary.

The union, however, called off the strike on June 9, after a Memorandum of Action was signed on May 20, 2021 by parties, including the Nigeria Governors Forum, agreeing to a 45 days window of implementation.

“While I celebrate with the entire work force in Nigeria on this special day set aside globally to recognize the contributions of our labor force, it is important that employers of labor evolve ways of enhancing the welfare of workers.

“As a lawyer, I recall the two months industrial action in 2021, by JUSUN, pursuant to its quest for implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary.

“The question now is what has that struggle by the judiciary work force yielded; has there been a full implementation by the various states, of the terms of reference which were direct fallouts from that agitation,” she said.

She noted that the celebration of workers day should serve as a pointer to all labour stakeholders, to seek avenues of improving the welfare of their labour force, as well as adhere to their demands.

“The workers day celebration should serve as a clarion call on the various states of the federation to effect implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary.

“It is important for the government to be responsive to the needs of its work force and also ensure adherence to the enabling labour laws,” she said.
