UK, Nigeria Finalise Agreement On Illegal Migrant Deportation

The United Kingdom and Nigeria have openly signed a full agreement which would implement a faster process to deport criminals.

The deal will also see some of the intended offenders getting to receive new travel documents within five working days.

Africa Today News, New York had reported that the UK had removed 13 Nigerians on Thursday, including eight foreign criminals and five who overstayed their visas. Home Secretary Priti Patel confirmed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nigeria.

The official noted that the MoU on migration issues would tackle illegal migration and the significant threat it poses to both nations. Patel said the countries will share their expertise and take the fight against persons responsible for criminality and security breaches.

“This landmark agreement will increase the deportation of dangerous foreign criminals to make our streets and country safer”, Patel added.

The UK Home Office has signed similar agreements with Serbia, Albania and India.

Some 38 Nigerians who were deported from the United Kingdom had arrived in Lagos, according to reports gotten from authorities in Nigeria.

Among those who were deported back to Nigeria also included mothers and grandmothers and some members of LGBTQ+ communities who were seeking asylum are also part of the deportees.

Some of the deportees claimed they have lived in the United Kingdom for many years. They arrived in Lagos early this morning with one Home Office charter flight.

However, the Nigeria Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BBC that the deportation was based on Immigration-related offenses.

In another report, it has been revealed that no fewer than 14 migrants, including Nigerians, have reportedly died following a fire incident that razed a boat in south Senegal on Wednesday.

Information reaching the desk of Africa Daily News, New York has it that about 21 people were injured as four of them suffered second-degree burns as they embarked on a journey to Spanish Canary Islands before the boat caught fire.

The mayor of the coastal town, Kafountine in Casamance, David Diatta said that the fire incident occurred yesterday.

‘We’ve been able to recover 14 bodies. The toll will likely rise,’ Diatta said, according to InfoMigrants.
