School Teacher, ​Droupadi Becomes India’s 2nd Female President

There is widespread jubilation in India as a former tutor, Droupadi Murmu has finally been elected as the 15th President of India after their elections.

64-year-old Murmu will be the second woman to lead the country after Pratibha Patil.

The president-elect who hails from the minority Santhal tribe, had been endorsed by over half of parliamentarians and state legislators.

Born in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, the politician started her career as a teacher before joining politics. Murmu held ministerial positions and became Governor of Jharkhand in May 2015, while becoming the first woman to ever hold the position.

“As a tribal woman from remote Mayurbhanj district, I had not thought about becoming the candidate for the top post”, she said early July.

Sanjay Srivastava, President of OFBJP West Africa, said the victory had brought about significant social change.

Srivastava expressed confidence that Murmu’s election would translate to the achievement of remarkable feats. He said the new leader emerged at a historical moment India needs social justice and societal transformation.

“We are so excited over Droupadi Murmu’s victory, being the country’s second female president after Pratibha Patil.

“We hereby congratulate her and the entire India nation, we look forward to a progressive nation”.

In another report, India have announced the seizure of $725 million from the local bank accounts of Xiaomi following a probe which found out that the Chinese smartphone giant had unlawfully sent money abroad in the guise of royalty payments, authorities.

India’s financial crime investigations agency had began investigating the company in February and revealed that it seized the money from the firm’s local arm after discovering it had made remittances to three foreign-based entities.

The Enforcement Directorate in a statement on Saturday said; ‘Such huge amounts in the name of royalties were remitted on the instructions of their Chinese parent group entities’.
