VP Ruto Defeats President Odinga In Kenya Presidential Polls

William Ruto who was/is the Deputy President of Kenya has been declared the winner of the country’s close-fought presidential election as he ousted incumbent President Odinga in the elections.

Some of the commissioners have also openly rejected the results of the just concluded election.

Chairman of the country’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Wafula Chebukati had made the declaration on Monday.

According to him, Ruto had won almost 7.18 million votes (50.49 percent) against 6.94 million (48.85 percent) for his rival Raila Odinga in the August 9 vote.

It had been previously reported that the Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has departed for Nigeria for Nairobi where he would be leading the team that would be monitoring the elections in Kenya.

The ex-leader has also revealed that he would be leading a team of observers to the country’s general elections that will be held on August 9. Jonathan is the Head of the Electoral Observation Mission of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA).

His spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze said the EISA team comprises 21 short-term observers drawn from Civil Society Organisations.

The delegation comprises election management bodies and representatives of the academia from across Africa. Eze noted that observers will be deployed in all the regions and specifically in ten counties in Kenya.

They will observe the final stages of the political parties’ campaigns, Election Day procedures and results from the aggregation processes.

Their assessment of the electoral process will be guided by the principles set out in the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
