After defeating second seed Anett Kontaveit on yet another spectacular night at the US Open, Serena Williams demonstrated that she has zero intention of retiring from her singles era without even a duel.
Williams, who is currently 413th in the world and will turn 41 next month, defeated the Estonian in New York 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-2.
The American, who just declared her desire to retire following her home major, is currently in the third round of the competition.
On Friday, Williams’ next opponent will be Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.

In an essay for fashion magazine Vogue, Williams announced she was ‘evolving away’ from playing, but she agreed that after beating Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic on Monday, she had been vague about her exact timeline.
‘There is no rush here,’ she laughed. ‘There is still a little left in me.’
Although she missed some of the pomp and occasion from her opening match on Monday, Williams’ attempt to extend her illustrious career by at least one more round created a special atmosphere.
Williams had impressed the passionate home crowd at the vast Arthur Ashe Stadium as she won a close first set while moving quickly and hitting the tennis ball accurately.
As Kontaveit evened the score in the second set, the former long-time world number one experienced a loss of energy. However, she bounced back to win a thrilling decider.
Williams eventually dealt with the situation better than her 26-year-old rival, who appeared nervous before the last game and hid behind her towel. Williams also secured a victory, which elated many in the joyful crowd to leap into celebration.
