Three Declared Dead After Croatia Train Crash

Fresh reports reaching the desk of Africa Today News, New York has revealed that at least three people have been killed and 11 have also been injured when a passenger train had collided with a stationary freight train in central Croatia.

The accident had also occurred at 9:30 pm (1930 GMT) Friday near the central town of Novska, some 100 kilometres (62 miles) southeast of Zagreb.

“According to current information, three people were killed and 11 injured” who were hospitalised, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, who went to the scene, told reporters Saturday.

None of the injuries had been life-threatening and the cause of the collision was not yet known.

The prime minister had also revealed that the injured included some of the foreign nationals but did not provide further details.

A Red Cross official told the state-run HINA news agency eight foreign nationals were among the injured and added they were most likely migrants. A hospital in the nearby town of Nova Gradiska said they had admitted a five-member Iranian family.

In another report, three people have been declared dead and no fewer than 50 have been injured when an Amtrak train which was carrying more than 200 passengers have derailed in northern Missouri on Monday.

The derailment had occurred after the train hit a dump truck at an uncontrolled crossing. The accident killed two on board and a person in the truck, officials said.

Eight cars and two locomotives derailed, Amtrak revealed, while leaving all but one car lying on its side along the track surrounded by grass and farmland.

Some of the passengers had evacuated the wreck through windows facing skyward, social media images showed, as dozens of rescue vehicles and some helicopters soon converged on the scene.

Rescuers used ladders to reach people perched atop the train. A vehicle axle was among the debris strewn along the track.
