Amechi Also Demanded Nigeria’s Independence – Obasanjo

One of the former presidents of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has paid a glowing tribute to the late Mbazulike Amechi who had just recently kicked the bucket.

The 93-year-old elder statesman who was also a former member of the House of Representative in 1959 had given up the ghost on Tuesday.

And a statement which had been put out by Obasanjo’s spokesman, Kehinde Akinyemi had also condoled with the government and people of Anambra State.

Obasanjo hailed Amechi’s “brilliant career” which straddled the political and community leadership in the country.

He had also recalled that Amechi had joined Chiefs Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Anthony Enahoro, etc., to demand Nigeria’s independence from colonial masters, Britain and Obasabjo said the deceased was a selfless and patriotic nationalist, an indefatigable politician and an unyielding activist.

“Chief Amechi will also be remembered as one who gave of his best as a member of the first Federal Cabinet.

“A decent and amiable gentleman, he commanded the respect and admiration of his peers and associates.”

The statement added that Amechi was an exemplary citizen who demonstrated that politics was an avenue for service, not “mindless enrichment”

Obasanjo, now in South Africa, was in DRC on Monday where he announced the formation of the Nigeria-Congo Business Council.

In another report, Shehu Mahdi who is a Kaduna-based vocal commentator and a well known loyalist and supporter of the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has come out to openly mock the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Mahdi had also made some open accusations on the former Head of State for claiming and preaching uprightness despite all the allegations which had been levelled against him.

In a Twitter post, the activist had also revealed that the former Plateau governor had been jailed for corruption put the blame on the retired General.
