China Deploy 3 Warships To Combat Pirates In Gulf Of Guinea

In a move to strengthen bilateral ties, the Chinese Navy Escort Task Group (ETG) 162, with MSL Destroyer NANNING, MSL Frigate SANYA, and Supply Ship WEISHANHU, visited Nigeria on Sunday.

Chinese Envoy, Chi Jian Chun states that the visit of the Chinese envoy to Nigeria, slated for July 2 to 6, will also strengthen maritime security in West Africa.

The Berth 21, MSL Destroyer NANNING made a port call at The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), while the other two ships stayed anchored.

With regard to the Chinese delegation to Nigeria, Mr. Chun emphasised its considerable size, involving over 700 individuals and the company of three ships.

‘The visit is to further deepen the relationship the two countries have with one another and also seek to strengthen and improve our relationship and cooperation with each other.’

‘This visit demonstrates the harmony and symphony between Nigeria and China,’ he added.

In his statement, the ambassador underscored the ongoing collaboration between China and Nigeria, highlighting their joint commitment to cultivating peace, harmony, and actively contributing to the international community.

‘I believe that this visit will deepen the cooperation between both countries’ military sectors so that we can work together to overcome obstacles.’

‘We will continue to do more things to facilitate and promote the relationship between the two countries,’ Mr Chun said.

According to Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, the visit would provide an invaluable chance to cement the relationship between the two countries even further.

This is ‘especially between the Nigerian Navy and the Chinese Navy, as well as the military. This will help us fight crimes, especially in the Gulf of Guinea.’

‘During their period of stay, our men will be interacting; we will be having some sporting activities, exchange of momentous and gifts.’

‘We will also discuss the future of both navies, especially how we can benefit from each other,’ Mr Akpan noted.

The Chinese community residing in Lagos demonstrated their immense enthusiasm and solidarity as they wholeheartedly embraced the arrival of the Chinese envoy at the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).
