The judiciary in Iran reported the execution on Saturday of a man who had been sentenced to death for collaborating with Israel’s intelligence services.

‘The death sentence was carried out this morning against a spy of the Zionist regime in Zahedan prison’ in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said.

It did not identify the man but said he had been convicted of ‘intelligence cooperation and espionage for the benefit for the hostile Zionist regime (Israel)’.

He was also found guilty of ‘collecting and providing classified information to the Mossad spy service with the aim of disrupting public order’, Mizan added.

The details of the man’s arrest and trial, including the time and location, were not immediately clear.

In the past, Iran has announced the arrests of individuals accused of serving as agents for foreign countries, notably Israel, its regional arch-enemy.

The Islamic republic executed four individuals in December 2022, all of whom had been convicted of collaborating with Israel’s intelligence services.

Iran does not recognize Israel, and the two countries have been involved in a longstanding shadow war for years.

Tehran points fingers at Israel, claiming responsibility for a coordinated campaign involving sabotage attacks and targeted assassinations with the intent of undermining its nuclear endeavors.

Iran faces accusations from the United States and Israel, who assert the utilization of drones and missiles in a series of attacks against US forces and ships affiliated with Israel in the Gulf.

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations reveal that Iran holds the second-highest annual execution rate globally, surpassed only by China.

The Iran Human Rights group, based in Norway, released a November report revealing that the Islamic republic has executed more than 600 people this year, marking the highest count in eight years.

Hanging is the customary method for executions in Iran.
