Agony As Fire Destroys 50 Shops In Kano Wood Market

Reports reaching the desk of Africa Today News, New York has it that properties worth at least ₦150 million have been gutted by an early morning fire at Yan Katako (Wood) Market in Rijiyar Lemo Market in Kano State. 

The Chairman of the market, Mamuda Musa Abdullahi said the fire started at about 1.00 am yesterday, noting that over 50 shops were affected by the fire.

According to him, the impacted stores sell furniture, foam, plywood, chairs, spray equipment, and other woodworking supplies.

The chairman did note that many traders had lost their source of income, even as he pleaded with the government and charitable organisations to assist them.

The spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif, who also confirmed the incident said no lives were lost, adding that they have launched an investigation to unravel the cause of the fire outbreak.

He said the service received an emergency call around 2.00a.m and immediately mobilised its men to the scene.

In a related development, Africa Today News, New York reports that a fire has gutted the private residence of the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, in the Asokoro area of Abuja.

An aide to the Minister, Austine Elemue, confirmed this incident to Africa Today News, New York on Monday.

He explained that the incident occurred at 10:30am on Sunday, and the fire razed the first floor of the duplex damaging a major part of the property but no harm was recorded by the occupants.

Though the cause of the fire outbreak has not been ascertained, Austine said the cause might not be unconnected to an electrical spark.
