Kobbie Mainoo, the rising star of Manchester United, has earned his first England call-up in preparation for upcoming friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium.
Mainoo’s emergence as one of Manchester United’s brightest young stars is the highlight of his breakthrough season at just 18 years old.
With 20 impressive showings in United’s central midfield this season, Mainoo has solidified his place and earned a well-deserved promotion to the England squad, a crucial step as they prepare for Euro 2024.
Mainoo’s journey to Gareth Southgate’s senior squad began with a nod from the England Under-21s, highlighting his growth and ability to seamlessly transition to higher levels of play.
‘Kobbie Mainoo has received his first call-up to the England senior squad,’ England’s Football Association said in a statement said on Tuesday.
Ahead of Gareth Southgate’s squad announcement for the European Championship in Germany, England’s upcoming fixtures include a clash against Brazil at Wembley on Saturday, followed by a home match against Belgium on March 26.
Given Southgate’s enduring appreciation for Mainoo, the young prodigy will have the opportunity to showcase his talents and earn his spot in the Euro squad.
Speaking at the Nations League draw in February, Southgate said: ‘He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such.
‘He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.’
Mainoo’s journey with United commenced when he was merely nine years old, culminating in his inaugural appearance during a League Cup fixture versus Charlton in 2023.
Mainoo made his debut start for United against Everton last November, seizing the moment to notch his maiden goal for the club in their triumphant FA Cup encounter with Newport in January.
