Residents of Derby spent Thursday night away from their homes after a major incident prompted the evacuation of around 200 properties. Two men were arrested on suspicion of explosives offenses following a police operation on Vulcan Street.
Derbyshire Police executed a warrant after receiving intelligence about hazardous materials at a residential property. A controlled explosion was carried out at approximately 16:00 GMT, with authorities confirming there was no wider risk to the community and the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
The evacuation zone included Vulcan Street, Reeves Road, Shaftesbury Crescent, Harrington Street, Baseball Drive, and Cambridge Street. Residents were allowed brief access to their homes until 08:00 on Friday after the British Army confirmed it was safe.
Derby City Council arranged accommodation for displaced residents, with the Pakistani Community Centre at 103 Harrington Street providing ongoing support. Earlier, the Salvation Army rest center on Osmaston Road assisted evacuees before closing on Thursday night.
Supt Becky Webster thanked the community for their cooperation: “Being asked to leave your home under such circumstances is understandably concerning and the support that the emergency services have had has been excellent.”
Community groups stepped in to help families. Amjad Ashraf, who runs the Pakistani Community Centre, said about 50 families sought assistance, with some finding temporary housing through Derby Homes, and volunteers providing food and emotional support.

Pregnant resident Amy Anderson described the disruption, “I’m hoping we’ll be able to get back in today, but I left the property thinking we would be able to get in last night, so I don’t really know. I’m very fortunate to have stayed at my mum’s house, but some neighbors had to go to hotels.”
Two men, aged in their 40s and 50s, were arrested and are currently in custody. Derbyshire Police stated that both individuals are Polish nationals. A police spokesperson said disclosing nationality and ethnicity is in line with national guidance to prevent misinformation.
A multi-agency meeting is scheduled for Friday morning, after which police will provide further updates on the investigation.
Gary Robb from the Salvation Army described the local response as “excellent,” highlighting the calm environment and compassion provided during the incident. Local community institutions, including the Gurdwara on Harrington Street, also assisted with refreshments and support.
