TCN Releases Update On Collapsed National Grid And Blackout

While reacting to the nationwide blackout that occurred on Wednesday, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) have on Thursday revealed that the restoration of the national grid was almost completed following its collapse on Wednesday.

“The incident was a result of a sudden drop in system frequency from 49.94 Hertz (HZ) to 47.36Hz, which created system instability,” she said.

Mbah had also noted that reports from the National Control Centre (NCC), while revealing that the collapse was precipitated by the tripping of a unit with a load of 106 Megawatts (MW) in one of the generating stations due to “Exhaust over Temperature” According to her, the tripping pulled out other grid-connected units in the plant, which resulted in an aggregated generation loss of 457MW.

“A train of events ensued, culminating in the collapse of the national grid. As obtainable in all systems, when a component of the electric power system is defective, the entire configuration is vitiated,” she said

An investigation was going on to establish the cause of the failure.

The Country had been thrown into another massive blackout which followed the massive crashing of the Nigerian electricity grid.

The national gridline had crashed to zero megawatts on Wednesday after it developed a fault

This blackout is one of many which is coming a few weeks after a similar collapse occurred on June 12 and just 20 days after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had activated a partial contract order for the Nigerian electricity market to guarantee 5,000MW and at least 4,000MW.

The grid went blank for the fifth time in 2022 at about 12 noon on Wednesday.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company made this known in a text message forwarded to its customers.

The text reads, “Dear customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the national grid at precisely 11:27 am today, Wednesday, July 20.

“We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline”.
