3 Killed, 495 Houses Destroyed As Flood Ravages Kano

No fewer than three persons were killed and about 495 houses were destroyed following a heavy downpour that has caused serious flooding in the Ajingi Local Government Area of Kano State.

During a visit to the families of the deceased, Saleh Jili, the executive secretary of the state emergency management agency, revealed this.

He said that the group came in Ajingi to express sympathy to the victims on behalf of state governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje.

He claimed that the incident, which happened after two days of intense rain on August 3 and 4, resulted in the destruction of 495 homes and the deaths of three individuals, including a 4-year-old girl.

Jili listed the affected areas to include Toranke, Kara Malama,Chuna and Balare in Ajingi Local Government Area.

He said as an interim measure, the team will hand over relief items to the Chairman, Relief and Emergency Committee of Ajingi local government, for onward distribution to the families of the deceased and injured.

According to him, a comprehensive report would be submitted to the government after an assessment of the disaster by personnel deployed to the area, for immediate action.

He advised residents to always clear their drainages and called on residents close to the river and ponds in the state to relocate to safer places and report to the SEMA office for possible assistance.

The Vice Chairman of Ajingi Local Government, Sa’ad Ibrahim-Toranke, commended the state government and agency for the gesture.
