The FBI was able to investigate the home of former President Donald Trump owing to a warrant that has been requested to be made public by the US Department of Justice.
The documents would be made public if the request were approved.
Additionally, Attorney General Merrick Garland disclosed that he personally approved the order, which was carried out on Monday at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
The cause for the probe has not yet been disclosed by the justice department, but it may be in the unsealed warrant.
Trump has until Friday to oppose the unsealing or divulge the warrant’s specifics on his own.
Nuclear weapons-related confidential materials were reportedly among the goods FBI investigators were seeking in the Mar-a-Lago raid, according to the Washington Post, which cited anonymous sources.
The newspaper was not informed by the informants if the information concerned US or weaponry from another country, nor were any such documents found.
The FBI search on Monday is reportedly related to a probe into whether the former president took sensitive documents and classified information from the White House.
The justice department has up to now adhere to its custom of keeping quiet while an investigation is ongoing, and records like search warrants are often kept sealed during this time.
However, Mr. Garland stated that it was in the public interest for the court to make the search warrant’s related records available.
He claimed that Mr. Trump’s announcement that the search had taken place had also had an impact on his choice.
‘The public’s clear and powerful interest in understanding what occurred under these circumstances weighs heavily in favor of unsealing,’ In a request submitted on Thursday in federal court, attorneys for the Justice Department stated.
A former president’s residence has never before in American history been raided as a result of a criminal inquiry. Mr. Trump and other Republicans denounced it as being politically driven.
However, Mr. Garland defended FBI agents and justice department officials from the allegations while addressing a press conference on Thursday.
‘I will not stand by silently when their integrity is unfairly attacked,’ Mr. Garland told reporters.’
He added that it was not a choice that was made hastily. It is customary to seek less invasive methods wherever possible, he said.
The former president stated his team was ‘cooperating fully’ with federal investigators in a statement on Thursday.
