After losing in three sets to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open, Serena Williams made her final appearance in the competition yesterday.

The 7-5 6-7 (7-4) 6-1 outcome undoubtedly signals the end of a spectacular career that which had gathered 23 Grand Slams throughout the years.

After defeating second seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round, Serena was finally knocked out by the dogged Australian after about three hours of victorious battle.

Shortly after the loss, Serena, 40, strolled to the net for a hand gesture as “Simply The Best” was sounded over the loudspeakers and saluted everyone who were present at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

When speaking to the crowd, an emotional Serena said, ‘Thank you so much, you guys were amazing. I tried. Thank you Daddy, I know you’re watching. Thanks Mom.’

‘I just thank everyone that’s here, that’s been on my side for so many years, literally decades, But it all started with my parents and they deserve everything so I’m really grateful for them. And I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus, so thank you Venus. It’s been a fun ride.’

When asked about the possibility of a new chapter, William said: ‘I don’t think so, but you never know.’

Africa Today News, New York earlier reported that Serena Williams defeating second seed Anett Kontaveit on yet another spectacular night at the US Open, she demonstrated that she has zero intention of retiring from her singles era without even a duel.

Williams, who is currently 413th in the world and will turn 41 next month, defeated the Estonian in New York 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-2.

The American, who just declared her desire to retire following her home major, is currently in the third round.
