Iraqi Retrial: German Woman Accused Of Crime Against Humanity

The Munich court set the stage for a fresh trial on Wednesday, summoning a German Islamist extremist to face charges related to the unfortunate passing of a 5-year-old Yezidi girl for which he was allegedly responsible.

Abiding by German privacy statutes, the woman, known only as Jennifer W, is alleged to have shown inaction as a young Yazidi girl perished under the intense midday heat during their time in Iraq.

A recent report indicates that she could potentially be looking at a lengthier stay in prison, following the appeals court’s ruling in March, where they deemed the initial 10-year sentence handed down to her in 2021 as insufficiently severe.

In preparation for the fresh trial, the Munich Higher Regional Court after meticulous consideration allocated a total of eight days for hearings, each overseen by a separate criminal senate.

Joining Islamic State at the young age of 23, the defendant went on to marry while in Syria, during a tumultuous period when the terrorist organization had established its presence across extensive areas in eastern Syria and north-western Iraq.

Having once been married to the perpetrator, the girl found herself in a nightmarish situation, bound in chains within the courtyard of their house. Meanwhile, the Frankfurt court found her former husband guilty of genocide, leading to a life sentence served in Germany.

The Karlsruhe court has verified and upheld the sentence in question. According to the evidence presented, the man not only purchased the girl but also her mother, both of whom had tragically fallen victim to abduction by Islamic State—an appalling fate experienced by numerous Yezidis.

According to reports, the young girl met her unfortunate demise in August 2015, when the merciless heat in Falluja escalated to a distressing 50 degrees Celsius.

The man’s actions paint a disturbing picture of cruelty, as he callously chained the young girl by her hands to the window bars, leaving her feet dangling in the air. Regrettably, the extreme heat took its toll, causing her to suffer from a heat stroke before he eventually released her from the chains.

Having examined the evidence, the German courts established that Jennifer W’s failure to intervene in saving the girl resulted in a critical lapse. As the date of August 29 approaches, the public awaits a new verdict that will further address this distressing situation.

The initial trial took flight in April 2019 and continued for an extensive span of approximately two and a half years.
