Fenerbahce president Alic Koc has explained the reasons behind the club’s decision to part ways with manager Jose Mourinho, emphasising the desire for a more attacking, dominant style of play. Speaking publicly, Koc stated, “We parted ways because we believed this squad would be playing better football at this point. We knew our coach would put emphasis on defence when we brought him in, but we talked about the need to play more dominantly at the end of the season.”
Koc highlighted the club’s ambitions and identity, noting that Fenerbahce’s approach has always combined high performance with attacking prowess. “Scoring 99 goals and getting 99 points, as Fenerbahce had done in the Super Lig in the 2023-24 season, is our genetic code,” he said. The statement reflects the board’s insistence on a style of football that aligns with the club’s historic philosophy and the expectations of fans, who value entertaining, high-scoring matches.
The president acknowledged Mourinho’s credentials and achievements but insisted that football philosophy and squad potential were decisive factors in the dismissal. “We respect the work Mourinho has done. His experience and knowledge are unquestionable, but we felt the team could achieve more in terms of offensive dominance,” Koc said.

During the 2023-24 season, Fenerbahce recorded an impressive campaign, amassing 99 points and scoring 99 goals, yet the board believes the squad can push further, particularly in terms of controlling matches and creating more scoring opportunities. The decision underscores Fenerbahce’s commitment to blending results with style, aiming to maintain a squad capable of competing at the highest level in Turkish football and Europe.
Koc’s remarks signal a clear message to the club, players, and supporters: the emphasis is not solely on defensive solidity, but on achieving an attacking identity that matches the club’s historic standards and ambitions. With Mourinho’s departure, the board will now focus on appointing a new manager who can deliver both results and the desired attacking philosophy, aligning with Fenerbahce’s long-term vision for domestic and continental competitions.
