Hjulmand Named Leverkusen Boss After Ten Hag’s Short Spell

A wave of stability has just washed over Bayer Leverkusen. Former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand has been officially appointed as their new head coach, signing a two-year deal to steer the Bundesliga’s runners-up forward after a brief and turbulent chapter under Erik ten Hag.

Hjulmand, 53, inherits a team in transition—one that is shedding the shadow of an ill-fated appointment and the lingering tailwind of Xabi Alonso’s domestic double. Ten Hag, brought in during the offseason, was unceremoniously dismissed after just two league matches, leaving a void and a distinct sense of urgency at the BayArena.

Stepping into this charged atmosphere, Hjulmand arrives with a credentials list that blends calm leadership with tactical insight. His four-year tenure with Denmark included a stirring campaign at Euro 2020, where his team reached the semi-finals, and steady qualification runs for the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.

Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro underscored the fit: “A newly assembled and developing squad like ours needs clear direction,” he said—praising Hjulmand’s communicative and empathetic style as crucial to shaping a team in flux.

Context amplifies the significance. Leverkusen has spent heavily this summer—roughly €170 million—on fresh faces: Malik Tillman, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah, Loïc Bade, and Mark Flekken among them. All part of a sweeping rebuild following departures of key fixtures like Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, and Jeremie Frimpong.

For Hjulmand, this marks a return to the Bundesliga landscape, where he previously had a brief, less heralded spell with Mainz 05 in 2014–15. His time at the national helm, however, attested to his capacity to unite and elevate, even amid crisis—as seen during Christian Eriksen’s collapse at Euro 2020.

Leverkusen now turn to Hjulmand to reignite a title push and lay a firm foundation for the future. Their league campaign resumes against Eintracht Frankfurt, with a Champions League opener set for Copenhagen later this month.

In appointing Hjulmand, the club bets on more than tactics—they bet on a steady guiding hand, someone who can fuse a largely new ensemble into a cohesive, ambitious force once again.
