Mbappé Ankle Injury Sidelines Captain From France vs Iceland

Mbappé Ankle Injury Sidelines Captain From France vs Iceland

French captain Kylian Mbappé has been ruled out of Monday’s World Cup qualifying match against Iceland after injuring his right ankle late in France’s 3–0 win over Azerbaijan, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed Saturday. The injury occurred in the 83rd minute of the match, during which Mbappé had scored and provided an assist.

According to the FFF, coach Didier Deschamps approved Mbappé’s withdrawal, and the forward will return to his club, Real Madrid. The federation also noted that Mbappé will not be replaced in the squad.

Mbappé’s absence is a major blow to France’s attacking prospects heading into a potentially decisive qualifier. With Les Bleus leading Group D with a perfect nine points from three matches, maintaining momentum is essential. The loss of their captain and top contributor could test the depth and tactical balance of Deschamps’ roster.

Before suffering the ankle knock, Mbappé made a massive impact in the match. He opened the scoring just before halftime and later delivered the assist for Adrien Rabiot’s goal. When Mbappé exited, substitute Florian Thauvin added a third to complete the victory.

Deschamps acknowledged the team’s performance in the first half, citing overly slow ball circulation and a lack of sharpness. “We got the result we wanted but not the performance, especially in the first half,” he said. “Our ball circulation was too slow … we didn’t do enough to unsettle them.”

The 26-year-old striker’s current season has been prolific. He’s netted 14 goals in 10 appearances for Real Madrid across competitions. France now prepares to travel to Reykjavik to face Iceland, who sit third in the group on three points. With Mbappé unavailable, Deschamps must reshuffle his attacking options and perhaps rely more heavily on supporting forwards.

The focus now shifts to the rehabilitation of Mbappé. The French Football Federation has made him available to his club, meaning Real Madrid’s medical team will lead the rehabilitation process. In the coming hours or days, the timing and severity of the injury would beassessed, and his availability for upcoming club fixtures — including high-profile matches like El Clásico would be knuwn. For now, his availability is in question.
