Meta’s Entry-Level Engineer Roles: Now Start Above $200K Pay

Meta intensifies the global race for AI talent with six-figure starting packages for new engineers, highlighting its push to secure skilled developers.

Meta Platforms Inc. is sharply escalating its search for top technical talent, opening a series of entry-level engineering roles that start at more than $200,000 per year. The move signals how aggressively the company is positioning itself in the global competition for artificial intelligence expertise.

The roles, advertised across several of Meta’s engineering divisions, require only a bachelor’s degree and minimal professional experience. Some positions specify that a single internship, a university project, or even one course in a programming language such as Python, C++, or PHP is sufficient to apply. In a market where AI skills are increasingly sought after, Meta’s unusually high compensation packages have drawn wide attention.

Recent listings show that product-focused software engineer roles begin at around $178,000 annually, while full-stack engineering positions start at roughly $176,000. Other openings reviewed by Fortune indicate that candidates with just one year of experience may earn as much as $258,000—figures typically associated with mid-career positions in the broader industry.

Meta, which has a market valuation of about $1.83 trillion, is competing in a crowded field as major technology companies race to build next-generation AI systems. Reports in recent months indicate that the company has actively recruited engineers from rivals such as Apple and OpenAI, a sign of its determination to strengthen its internal AI capabilities.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly emphasized that AI is central to Meta’s long-term strategy. In a memo circulated earlier this year, he described the technology as the start of “a new era for humanity,” pledging that the company would invest heavily to remain at the forefront of AI development. He has also stressed that Meta prioritizes skill and adaptability over academic credentials, telling Bloomberg in 2024 that he values candidates “who can learn something and take it to an excellent level.”

The competitive salaries come amid Meta’s recent $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, a data-infrastructure company founded by 28-year-old entrepreneur Alexander Wang. Zuckerberg has praised Wang’s role in advancing Meta’s broader AI goals, calling the partnership essential to the company’s future direction.

As global demand for AI engineers continues to surge, Meta’s compensation strategy underscores the increasingly high stakes in attracting skilled developers. With companies worldwide vying for a limited pool of talent, Meta’s latest offers highlight just how far major players are willing to go to secure the expertise needed to shape the next wave of technological innovation.
