FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has identified the defence as a priority area for reinforcement, with the club assessing options for a new centre-back or left-back during the January transfer window. However, any immediate plans are being constrained by strict financial and regulatory limitations that significantly reduce Barcelona’s room for manoeuvre this winter.
According to reports, Flick has drawn up a shortlist of high-profile defensive targets, including Marc Guéhi of Crystal Palace, Dayot Upamecano of Bayern Munich, and Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund. All three are regarded as elite-level defenders capable of strengthening Barcelona’s back line, offering versatility, physical presence and tactical intelligence suited to Flick’s style of play.
Despite the ambition behind those names, Barcelona face major obstacles in January. Ongoing Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions mean the club cannot commit to high transfer fees, while LaLiga registration rules further complicate matters by preventing the registration of expensive new signings during the winter window. As a result, even if Barcelona were able to negotiate a deal, completing and registering such transfers would not be feasible under current conditions.
Given these constraints, Barcelona’s only realistic option in January is the free-transfer market. Club sources indicate that Flick may need to rely on short-term solutions, squad adjustments or internal options to navigate the second half of the season. This approach aligns with Barcelona’s recent strategy of prioritising financial stability while remaining competitive on the pitch.

For Flick, the challenge is balancing immediate defensive needs with long-term planning. While January offers limited scope for action, the club remains committed to strengthening the squad once conditions allow. The coming months will therefore be defined less by transfer activity and more by careful squad management, as Barcelona aim to remain competitive while laying the groundwork for a more decisive rebuild in the next transfer window.
