Third data center pushes Musk’s AI project toward one of the world’s biggest training systems, raising energy and environmental concerns globally.
Elon Musk is pressing ahead with an aggressive expansion of xAI’s computing ambitions, acquiring a third building to scale up the company’s flagship Colossus supercomputer as its power demand approaches levels rarely seen in the artificial intelligence industry.
The newly acquired facility, referred to by Musk as “MACROHARDRR,” is expected to significantly increase xAI’s training capacity, pushing the system’s total power draw toward nearly two gigawatts. Musk disclosed the purchase in a post on X on December 30, 2025, describing it as a key step in strengthening xAI’s ability to train larger and more capable AI models.
Colossus, xAI’s main supercomputer cluster, is based in the Memphis area and has been repeatedly described by Musk as the largest AI training system in the world. Reports indicate the third building is a large warehouse near Southaven, Mississippi, intended to serve as an additional data center supporting both the existing Colossus site and a second facility, known as Colossus 2, which remains under construction. Conversion of the warehouse into a full-scale data center is expected to begin in 2026.
The expansion underscores the scale of xAI’s ambitions. Musk has said the broader Colossus project could eventually house at least one million high-performance graphics processing units, with Colossus 2 alone designed to accommodate roughly 550,000 advanced Nvidia chips. Industry analysts estimate that such capacity would require investments running into tens of billions of dollars.

Reaching close to two gigawatts of compute power would also make the Colossus complex one of the most energy-intensive AI facilities globally. Musk has compared the electricity demand to that of about 1.5 million U.S. homes. To support this load, xAI is developing its own energy infrastructure, including a natural gas power plant near the Memphis sites, alongside connections to other power sources.
The energy footprint has drawn scrutiny from environmental advocates and local residents. A July 2025 investigation by the Tennessee Lookout reported that the facility was operating more methane-powered gas turbines than initially permitted, raising concerns about air quality in surrounding communities. Local officials and activists have warned that emissions could worsen pollution levels in areas already facing elevated health risks.
xAI says it is taking steps to reduce its environmental impact. The company is moving forward with an $80 million wastewater treatment facility designed to recycle up to 13 million gallons of water per day, easing pressure on local drinking water supplies used for cooling.
Founded in 2023, xAI is Musk’s direct bid to compete with leading AI developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. With the acquisition of a third data center and plans for multi-gigawatt scale computing, the company is signaling that rapid expansion remains central to its strategy, even as questions about sustainability and community impact grow louder.
