Hong Kong police have arrested six people in connection with a high-value robbery that took place in the territory on Friday, authorities said on Saturday. The incident involved the theft of a backpack containing approximately 58 million yen — equivalent to more than US$376,000 — from two Japanese nationals.
The robbery occurred during the day on a busy thoroughfare in central Hong Kong, a bustling area known for its shops, offices and heavy foot traffic. Police did not immediately disclose the exact location, but confirmed the theft sparked a rapid investigation involving several divisions of the force.
By Saturday, officers had detained six suspects, including three Japanese nationals and three individuals from mainland China and Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Police Force said in a statement. Authorities also reported that part of the stolen money has been recovered, though they did not provide details on the exact amount or where it was found.
Police said the arrests came after coordinated efforts that involved reviewing CCTV footage and following leads from witnesses. At this stage, charges have not been formally announced, and detectives are continuing to question the suspects as part of an ongoing probe into the crime.
Representatives for the Japanese Consulate in Hong Kong acknowledged the incident and said they are offering assistance to the victims, though they did not comment on their condition. Police have not reported any injuries related to the robbery.
Hong Kong has seen a number of high-profile theft cases in recent years, but a robbery involving such a large sum of cash remains relatively rare. Law enforcement officials described the case as a priority and said they are committed to ensuring public safety and swift justice.
