Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate 1, based on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, have successfully apprehended two Chinese nationals and six Nigerians for their alleged involvement in illegal mining operations in the Ogere area of Ogun State.
The individuals—identified as Zhang Hang Lin, Gao Pei Hai, Matthew Mathias, Oluwaseun Amoo, Wasiu Ademola Alao, Ajibola Nurudeen, Ibrahim Yinusa, and Saidu Shuaibu—were detained on Friday, May 9, 2025, during a meticulously planned sting operation. This followed credible intelligence and extensive surveillance of their illicit activities.
At the time of their arrest, EFCC operatives seized three trucks loaded with sacks containing substances believed to be ground lithium powder, in addition to other unidentified solid minerals.
Other items recovered from the suspects include a Toyota 4Runner SUV, mobile phones, samples of suspected low-grade lithium, ATM cards, international passports, four LED flashlights, and various documents relevant to the investigation.
