Peter Obi has clarified that he still holds his position within the Labour Party, even as he actively participates in the African Democratic Congress-led opposition coalition working to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an appearance on the Sunday Politics programme, Obi dismissed suggestions that his involvement with the coalition amounted to anti-party conduct, insisting that his actions remain aligned with his broader political commitments.
He said, “The coalition just adopted a party for 2027. So, we are trying to work together for the sake of Nigeria.
“Today, I am a Labour Party member. I remain in the Labour Party. But we have all agreed to work as a coalition for the 2027 election, and for that, we’ve adopted ADC. Going on, other parties, other individuals will also come in.
“We want better governance for this country. We want to see a more competent government with capacity and character.

Peter Obi explained that the coalition could eventually include other political parties or even operate under a new name, as has happened in past alliances.
He emphasised that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party while working with the coalition, dismissing any claims of anti-party behaviour.
Obi pointed out that their focus is on the 2027 elections, noting that it is still 2025 and preparations are underway for the future. He illustrated his stance by saying that agreeing to join someone for dinner does not mean abandoning breakfast or lunch, implying that his participation in the coalition does not negate his loyalty to his party.
