Trump Imposes 50% Tariff On Brazil, Criticizes Bolsonaro Trial

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday revealed plans to impose a steep 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports starting August 1, in a move that escalates tensions with South America’s largest economy.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Trump condemned the ongoing prosecution of former president Jair Bolsonaro, describing it as a “witch hunt” and calling the proceedings an “international disgrace” that should never have happened.

The White House also confirmed it would initiate a comprehensive investigation into Brazil’s trade practices as part of its broader review of economic ties with the country.

Trump’s latest tariff threat follows Brazil’s decision to summon the US charge d’affaires, expressing anger over his earlier remarks criticising Bolsonaro’s trial linked to the alleged coup attempt.

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has rejected claims that he plotted to overthrow President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, dismissing prosecutors’ allegations of a failed coup as baseless and politically driven. Authorities argue that the plan collapsed only because Bolsonaro failed to gain the military’s backing.

US President Donald Trump, however, has openly defended Bolsonaro, taking to social media earlier to urge Brazilian officials to “LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE.”

On Wednesday, Trump announced the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods starting August 1, accusing Brazil of undermining democratic processes and warning of further punitive measures should the country respond with counter-tariffs.

Although Trump has recently sent warning letters to countries with which the US carries significant trade deficits, Brazil had not previously been listed among those facing imminent tariff hikes before Wednesday’s surprise declaration.
