Authorities in Kentucky say a shooting at Kentucky State University has left one person dead and another fighting for life, after a gunman opened fire on campus. Police later confirmed that the suspect, who is not enrolled at the school, was quickly detained.
Frankfort officers said they rushed to the scene after receiving reports of what they described as an “active aggressor”. The campus was locked down as a precaution, although officials later stressed that the danger had passed.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said early indications suggest the attack stemmed from a targeted dispute rather than a broader assault on the university community. In a message shared on X, he said two people were gravely injured and confirmed that one of the victims had died. He added that the swift arrest of the suspect meant there was no continuing threat to students or staff, calling the violence heartbreaking and urging support for those affected.
The campus shooting came only hours after a separate act of violence rattled a high school in North Carolina.

Police in Winston-Salem were called to North Forsyth High School late on Tuesday morning after a confrontation between students escalated into a stabbing. Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough told reporters that deputies found two students wounded. One later died, and the other was treated in hospital before being discharged.
The school district notified parents and staff by email, confirming the death and saying support teams had been deployed. Investigators have released few details about what led to the altercation, and officials avoided answering questions due to the ongoing inquiry.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein described the killing as a shocking moment for the community and said his thoughts were with the families trying to make sense of the tragedy.
