How I Reacted When GEJ Called To Concede Defeat - Buhari
Goodluck Jonathan

Barely a few days to the end of his eight-year tenure, Nigeria’s outgoing President, Muhammadu Buhari has opened up on what his reaction was when ex-President Goodluck Jonathan telephoned him after the 2015 election.

Speaking on Friday morning, at a farewell meeting with his media support group, the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO), Buhari explained that he was very shocked by the move.

The Nigerian leader called on citizens to walk on the path of duty ‘if we really want to see the country achieve new heights’.

On the phone conversation with his predecessor, he said Jonathan ‘called at 5:25pm that evening to say congratulations’.

‘I said pardon me Mr. President? He said yes, and I called to concede and congratulate you.’

That was equally very un-Nigerian.

Buhari also recalled the countries he had been to on military training, citing a particular one where people died of hunger overnight.

The President described Nigeria as a lucky nation given the natural resources available to it and its vast population.

Meanwhile, against the backdrop of the ongoing litigations and protests intended to stop the inauguration of Nigeria’s President-elect and his deputy, Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima, the Nigerian Presidency has insisted that the event would hold as scheduled on the 29th of May.

This was emphasised by the Chairman of the Presidential Transition Committee and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha when he spoke at a World Press Conference on Thursday evening.

Africa Today News, New York gathered that the media outing was put together to bring Nigerians and the entire world up to speed on the programmes of activities planned for the 2023 Presidential Inauguration.

Mustapha who described the upcoming event as historically significant to the country and the international community, particularly Africa because of the democratic values and lessons in nationhood, said it was for these reasons, the committee chose ‘Nigeria: Better Together’, as the theme for the 2023 transition.
