Imasuen Questions Impeachment Plot Against Akpabio

The LP’s Senator Neda Imasuen, who serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, representing Edo South, has lambasted some of his fellow senators for their alleged plot to impeach Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, questioning the feasibility of gathering adequate support for such an action.

Senator Imasuen, during his conversation with the press on Monday, argued that Senators should divert their attention from impeachment and focus on crucial national issues, including poverty, unemployment, the country’s infrastructural deficits, insecurity, and the state of the economy. He firmly stated that those endeavouring to remove the Senate President cannot garner sufficient support.

Senator Imasuen said, ‘This is a Senate that has just started its tenure of four years, it is barely two months old, it will be out of place for anyone or group to be talking of impeachment and I ask what is the basis of this impeachment plot, where will they get the number from? They cannot get the number to remove the President of the Senate.’

‘This 10th Senate is a corrective one and we need to be focused on the most important issues facing the nation like poverty, unemployment, infrastructural deficit across the nation, insecurity and the economy. Any other issue outside these will be a distraction.’

‘Therefore, I enjoin my brothers and sisters in the Senate to focus on what brought us to the Upper Chamber and these are security and welfare of the people. These should be our focus.’

Last Saturday, reports surfaced suggesting that plans were in motion to unseat Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio when the Senate convenes again.

The report additionally mentioned that two notable Senators from the North West, together with fellow Senators, had commenced meetings and were actively formulating strategies for the removal of Akpabio from his position as the President of the 10th Senate.

In addition, the report claimed that the Senators had concerns about the Senate President’s effectiveness in carrying out his duties, suspecting that he was functioning as a mere rubber stamp.

As a reminder, Section 50(2)(c) of the Constitution specifies that to legally impeach any presiding officer of a legislature, it requires the support of two-thirds of the total 109 senators, rather than two-thirds of those present on the floor.
