Floods Killed 68 Persons, Affected 129,000 Others In 2020 – FG

The Federal Government has said that the devastating impact of flooding in 2020 claimed the lives of 68 people, affecting over 129,000 people across the country.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs. Sadiya Umar Faruk, stated this at the official flag off of the distribution of relief materials to the 2020 flooding victims held in Miga, Jigawa State.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Bashir Umar Alkali, the minister said the relief materials included cash and in-kind, to be distributed to the victims in the 16 worst hit states.

The minister explained that the assistance will be given to the 129,000 victims either in cash or in kind.

According to her, ‘1600 households of 9,600 persons will receive the relief materials, provision of shelter kits to 183 households comprising 1,098 persons most especially widow’s and women-headed households and provision of 62 motorized boreholes and 62 hand washing points across the flood prone states of the country’.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, commended the Federal Government for the intervention, which he said will assist in stabilization of the beneficiaries and their communities.

The relief materials were provided by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) through Red-Cross to complement the effort of the Federal Government in supporting the victims.
