Up to $300 million in additional security assistance will be provided by the U.S. Department of Defense to Ukraine’s forces fighting Russian troops.

In a statement, U.S. Defense Secretary John Kirby said that the new package consists of laser-guided rocket systems, unmanned aircraft, armored vehicles, night vision devices, tactical secure communication systems and ammunition. The list also includes medical supplies, equipment, and spare parts.

Rather than delivering equipment from military stockpiles, Kirby said the new package “represents the beginning of a contracting process for the provision of new capabilities” to Ukraine.

In the five weeks since Russia invaded, the United States has provided more than $1.6 billion in security assistance, he said.

The U.S. Congress passed a funding bill in mid-March, which included 13.6 billion dollars in humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine and NATO allies in eastern Europe.

As noted above, the majority of the Ukrainian military equipment has been supplied by the United States, through a process known as “presidential drawdown.”
