The heavyweight champion condemned knife violence, describing it as a ‘pandemic’, while saying, ‘you don’t know how bad it is until it’s one of your own’.
The police verified that Mr. Burton who was 31 years before the tragic incident, was attacked at Goose Green, Altrincham, Greater Manchester.
Following the tragic incident, two men have been detained, alleged to be linked to a case where a 17-year-old suffered severe injuries.
Supt Ben Ewart mention that one of the suspects, 21, was apprehended at the scene and the other, who was 20, was detained later. Both are in police detention.
Mr. Fury made a heartfelt appeal earlier on social media:: ‘This is becoming ridiculous – idiots carry knives. This needs to stop.’
The boxer requested that the government should ‘bring back higher sentencing for knife crime’.
He concluded the post with a tribute to his cousin: ’Life is very precious and it can be taken away very quick. Enjoy every moment.’
‘RIP Rico Burton – may the lord God grant you a good place in heaven, see you soon.’
At around 3:00 BST on Sunday, Supt. Ewart of the Greater Manchester Police reported that numerous calls had been made to the emergency responders.
When doctors arrived on the scene, they discovered Mr. Burton and the 17-year-old both suffering from puncture wounds and taking first aid from bystanders.
He claimed that Mr. Burton passed away at Manchester Royal Infirmary after the hospital received both victims.
‘This is without doubt a senseless attack and both victims should have returned home this morning after enjoying a night out with friends,’ Supt Ewart explained.
He further said: ‘Goose Green is a popular nightspot and would have been busy at the time and I appeal for anyone who was there overnight on Saturday or anyone with information about this incident – including phone photograph footage or videos – to come forward, in particular any friends of any of the victims or suspects who may have been out with them that night who have not yet come forward.’
When asked what information the police had on a potential argument, Supt. Ewart responded that it was a “very live” investigation and that was “obviously a factor we’re looking into”.
According to data, knife crimes increased by 10% in England and Wales from March 2022 to 49,027 offenses.
Since 2015, the public’s worry over knife attacks and judges’ stricter commands have resulted in heavier penalties, albeit juvenile offenders continue to be more probable receiving warnings than a prison sentence.
