The vice-captain of the Nigerian Super Eagles team, William Troost-Ekong has rated compatriot Victor Osimhen as the best striker in the world following the impressive performance that has been seen from the Napoli forward so far this season.
Africa Today News, New York reports that the performance that has been put up by the 24-year-old this season has been scintillating which has seen him scoring an astonishing 19 goals in 22 league games.
Osimhen’s impressive form earned him the league’s best player of the month for January, while he was named the winner of the Serie A Goal of The Month Award for his stunning Pele-like goal against Roma in the same month.
The former Lille’s player fantastic form in front of goal is one of the reasons Luciano Spalleti’s side are league leaders, 18 points more than second-placed Inter Milan, and are on course to win the Italian league title for the first time in over three decades.
Speaking to DAZN during the broadcast ‘Tutti Bravi dal Sofa’ (as per Tutto Napoli) yesterday which was monitored by Africa Today News, New York, former Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam believed the Nigerian forward was not yet at the level of Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
‘Today, the best striker is (Karim) Benzema, but then there’s (Erling) Haaland, who is scoring a lot of goals. He’s a phenomenon in the penalty area,’ he said.
However, Troost-Ekong insists that Osimhen is the finest striker in the world.
‘Osimhen is probably the best striker in the world right now. I am happy for him because he has overcome difficult moments,’ he was quoted as saying by Sports Italia.
The 29-year-old, who joined Salernitana on loan from Watford, also talked about the future of the forward following links to Manchester United in the Premier League.
