Tinubu's Trip For Rest, Hajj Not Medical Grounds - Spokesman

The spokesperson of Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu, has denied viral speculations he travelled out of the country on medical grounds.

A statement by Tunde Rahman which was sent to Africa Today News, New York on Thursday, said the president-elect travelled out to rest after energy-sapping presidential campaign.

He said Tinubu left Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja for Paris, France and would also attend Umrah (Lesser Hajj) in Saudi Arabia.

‘After a very exhaustive campaign and election season, President-elect, Bola Tinubu, has travelled abroad to rest and plan his transition programme ahead of May 29, 2023 inauguration. The President-elect left the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja for Europe on Tuesday night.

‘The President-elect decided to take a break after the hectic campaign and election season to rest in Paris and London, preparatory to going to Saudi Arabia for Umrah (Lesser Hajj) and the Ramadan fasting that begins Thursday. While away, the President-elect will also use the opportunity to plan his transition programme. He is expected back in the country soon. We enjoin the media to stop publishing rumours and unsubstantiated claims and to always seek clarifications from our office,’ Rahmad said.

Recall that Tinubu, had earlier decried the post-election violence, arson, and physical and verbal assaults that were witnessed in some states against the backdrop of Saturday’s governorship and state House of Assembly election across the country.

He also pointed out that he is saddened by cases of ethnic slurs, capable of creating needless mis-characterisation reported in some locations.

The former Lagos State governor, in a statement he personally signed and made available in Abuja, indicated readiness to work with the newly elected persons across party level to move the country forward. 

Meanwhile, Africa Today News, New York can confirm that Tinubu’s victory is currently being challenged at the elections petition tribunal.
