Rivers ₦200bn Supplementary Budget Passes 1st Reading

A request by the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, for a supplementary budget to be approved has gotten the Rivers State House of Assembly busy. 

The house had yesterday deliberated on the matter and it has passed the first reading.

Africa Today News, New York recalls that Fubara had earlier this month, made a ₦200bn supplementary budget request to the House in order to fulfill some infrastructural developments in the state.

At the plenary on Friday, former Deputy Speaker and current House Leader Edison Ehie took a reading of the letter and asked that the House consider the request.

The letter to the House read at plenary by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, mentioned the construction of the Port Harcourt ring road for which funding was not captured in the 2023 budget was specifically mentioned.

Against the backdrop of some consultation, the Speaker declared the letter had passed the first reading.

Meanwhile, some students from the University of Port Harcourt protested outside the House, demanding that the Speaker intervene and ask the governor to fulfil his promise to pay them bursaries.

The Speaker promised to do something about it, as he commended the students on their boldness.

Shortly after his swearing-in, Governor declared that the mandate of his administration was to serve the interest of Rivers people with a deep sense of responsibility and commitment and that he is prepared to aggressively pursue.

The governor, who spoke during a special thanksgiving service organised by Chiefs, leaders and stakeholders of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in honour of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, asserted that he would not be distracted in the discharge of his official functions.

He urged the people of the state to support his administration to succeed as a government to enable him continue the development of the state.
