On Monday, the Rapid Response Squad of the Ekiti State Police Command arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of an 85-year-old farmer in Iyin-Ekiti.
Ogunlusi Damilola, Olorunsola Segun, and Sekoni Tunde are the names of the suspects who were arrested, as stated in the statement by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Sunday Abutu.
The suspects, according to Abutu’s statement, had a notorious history of targeting farmers and conducting attacks to rob them of their harvested crops.
Their modus operandi involved violent confrontations and armed robberies, leaving farmers vulnerable and fearful for their lives and livelihoods.
According to the PPRO, ‘During interrogation the suspects confessed that on Wednesday last week, at about 5pm, they went to the octogenarian farm situated off lyin-Ado express road, attacked him with marchete and carted away some tubers of yam.’

In another disclosure, the suspects admitted to a similar incident. During the incident they inflicted serious injuries on the victim.
The PPRO added: ‘They confessed that on Tuesday, 27th of July, they entered another farm settlement at Ipole-Ekiti where one Awe Taiwo Julius was inflicted with serious injuries and ten tubers of yam were carted away in the process.’
The 85-year-old victim, as reported by Abutu, passed away at Ekiti State Teaching Hospital in Ado-Ekiti, where he was receiving medical care.
Abutu also mentioned that the stolen yam tubers were successfully recovered, but the police’s efforts to apprehend the other members of the gang who are currently on the run are still ongoing.
Once the investigation is finalised, the arrested suspects will be presented before the court for arraignment, where they will face the full force of the law for their actions.
